What is a logo?
According to Wikipedia,
A logo is a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol used to aid and promote public identification and recognition.
Logos can be of many types. A text written in a specific font or style is also a logo, a.k.a. word mark. The main motive of a logo is to showcase the core values of a business to the target audience. It can be done in a very abstract way as well. Most modern logo designs are very abstract and simple. This is because a logo needs to be memorable. Once you see a logo, you should be able to sketch out a version of it even after a few days. That’s what a good logo is.
Logos for Businesses
Most people and businesses have now realised the importance of a logo in today’s digital age. The only problem is that when someone is starting out a business, they don’t want to spend much money on the logo and sometimes they even get it done for free by someone else. I can understand that they want to invest as much resources into their business at that stage but there’s a much better way. I would recommend going on to sites that offer free commercial use fonts like Google Fonts, choosing a good font and just writing your company’s name. That would be a well designed logo and would work for a short period of time. Then, once you are ready to make the investment (notice I am using the word ‘investment’ and not ‘expense’) you go to an experienced designer to get it done.
Once businesses are ready to make that transaction, let’s say that they come to a designer like me and ask for a logo. Their requirement might be like, ‘we want a logo to attract more customers.’ The problem here is that a logo design won’t solve it. This is where branding comes in.
What is branding?
According to Wikipedia,
A brand is a name, term, design, symbol, or other feature that distinguishes an organisation or product from its rivals in the eyes of the customer.
Branding is the big picture. It is the story of your company. Branding is basically a set of values that you want across all your branded content. This could be your products, website, packaging, in-store experience etc. Think of Apple. When you look at an Apple product, their website, packaging or their stores, you can understand that they are a premium and technologically innovative company. All of their brand experiences are designed in a way that speaks to its target customers. If you look at the Apple logo, it’s just a simple Apple. The logo doesn’t convey ‘premium’ and ‘innovation’ on its own, it is the branding that speaks that story.
Branding for Businesses
I hope that now you understand what branding is, now let’s see how it can help your business. Branding is the only thing that can get you to your ideal customer. Even if you spend a lot of money on advertising and marketing, without a good branding, you might not be able to see growth. The problem is not that you are not reaching a lot of people, it is that your brand isn’t sticking to their minds. A good brand is the one that tells a story as stories are easy to relate with.
A logo is just a part of this whole branding. Branding also includes the fonts, colors, packaging, materials, photography, etc. All this might sound irrelevant or unnecessary to you but once you start to see the growth, you’ll be amazed. Why do you think these huge companies like Uber and Google do rebrands? Uber recently went through a major rebrand as it wanted to target a different audience with a whole new message. This message needs to show in all of their brand experiences and the new rebrand definitely does that.
Now you know what a logo is and how important it is for your business. Even more important than that is branding. I wanted to introduce a lot of you to it and let you know that I now only offer logo design with a branding package. I am only interested in providing the best value for my clients and help them solve actual problems.
